Update: Report Cards Will Now Be Issued

17 June 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through the delivery of student marks for this school year. This letter is to provide you with an important update on the status of final elementary school report cards at the Toronto District School Board amidst ongoing province-wide strike action by elementary teachers.

Last week, we told you that students would receive a letter confirming their grade placement for the upcoming school year. At that point in time, we also believed that parents/guardians could speak to their child’s teacher to discuss individual marks. We have since learned that in addition to not entering marks electronically and not providing comments, teachers have been directed by their union to not speak with parents/guardians about student marks. Unfortunately, due to the size of some of our schools, principals will not be able to discuss all student marks in a uniform and timely manner.

It is important to the TDSB that all students have equitable access to their final marks. As a result, we are pleased to inform you that an alternate plan has been developed and we will be able to provide Grade 1-8 students and parents/guardians with a summary of marks. As Kindergarten students do not regularly receive marks as a part of their final report card, those students will receive letters confirming their placement for the upcoming school year.

The Grade 1-8 summary of marks will be different than the regular June report card as it will not contain comments or learning skills. Marks will be included with attendance information and student grade placement for the next school year. Parents/guardians may still contact teachers to discuss their child’s progress.

The Kindergarten placement letter and Grade 1-8 summary of marks will be mailed to parents/guardians during the week of July 13 to the address that is on file at your school.

Our dedicated principals and vice-principals are working tirelessly to provide parents/guardians with their child’s summary of marks and we are doing our best to support them. During this time, while principals are preparing marks, we would appreciate your continued patience and ask that instead of requesting marks from your school, you wait for them to arrive by mail. We value the feedback that we have received from our community and appreciate your support as we prepare for the upcoming school year.
