Essex Families, PROJECT SNOWMAN needs your help!

image001A local charity, Ripple Clothes for Kids, wants to outfit 1000 Toronto area babies and children with quality snowsuits. They aim to help kids enjoy their morning recess, rather than shivering and counting the minutes until it’s over. They hope new moms can safely take their babies out to their doctor’s appointments even on a cold January morning.

Here’s how you can pitch in:

Beginning November 17th – December 1st – Donate your kids’ hand-me-down snowsuits

  • We ARE looking for winter jackets, snow pants and one-piece snowsuits in excellent or very good condition (no rips or stains) sizes newborn to 16
  • Sorry, we CANNOT accept: boots, mittens, hats, other children’s clothing or adult winter wear
  • Please wash donated items, bag them in clear plastic bags and label the bag by size and gender
  • There is a bin located in the front foyer to place your snowsuit.

Snowsuits will be distributed to  Humewood HouseNorth York Women’s ShelterHope for Children Fund (Catholic Children’s Aid Society)The RedwoodRosalie HallDr. Roz’s Healing PlaceNellie’s and Horizons for Youth, as well as students in our TDSB schools.

Peer Leaders Programme

Dear Parents of grade 7 and 8 students:

We are excited to announce the continuation of last year’s Peer Leaders Programme with Harbord C.I.  Abby and Allegra, two grade 12 students, and some grade 9 students, will come to Essex for 5 exciting lunchtime sessions to prepare students for high school life.  The topics this year are: high school life, equity, bullying, leadership and privilege.  At the end, the grade 7 and 8s will go to Harbord C.I. for the day, as well as have a buddy day here at Essex.  This could be a very beneficial programme if your son/daughter is already thinking about the transition to high school.

If you’d like your grade 7 or 8 to sign up, they should give their names to their homeroom teacher no later than next Friday November 20th.  The classes will be held once a month at lunchtime.  If you’d like more information please contact leslie.tumangday@tdsb.on.ca

Thanks,

Leslie

Progress Reports: Update

Dear Elementary and Junior High School Parents/Guardians,

We are pleased to let you know that both the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents school support staff, have reached tentative agreements with the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA), which represents the province’s public school boards.

ETFO and CUPE have agreed to bring province-wide job actions to a close, effective immediately, while these agreements are finalized. Both unions are also in ongoing local negotiations with the TDSB. We will send you updates as our talks continue.

This means that elementary students will receive their fall progress reports, which will be issued on December 10, 2015, pending ratification of the tentative agreement with ETFO. As part of the tentative agreement, teachers will conduct parent interviews at their discretion if the teacher has a concern about a child’s progress. If you have concerns about your child’s progress after receiving the progress report, please contact the teacher directly.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) Professional Student Services Personnel Unit, which represents education workers (not teachers) including Attendance Counsellors, Child and Youth Counsellors/Workers, Social Workers, Speech- Language Pathologists and others, has not reached an agreement and negotiations are ongoing.

We thank all school-based staff and central teams who remained dedicated to student learning during this exceptional time.

As we move forward to finalize provincial and local collective agreements, we thank you, the parent/guardian community, for your continued patience and understanding.

We are committed to keeping you informed. Please continue to check www.tdsb.on.ca/labour for more information.

Sincerely,

Robin Pilkey Donna Quan
Chair of the Board Director of Education

Syrian Family Sponsorship

Great News Essex and Hawthorne Families!

We are two-thirds of the way toward our goal of $30,000 and have a great start on volunteers to help us sponsor a family from Syria in their efforts to come to Canada. Hawthorne Parent Council has generously agreed to a donation of about $5,000 and we have $15,000 in personal donations so far. With one full week left to reach our goal, we really appreciate any contribution you can make. Please contact us at hawthorne2sponsorship@gmail.com.

Sponsorship is exciting but it may be a bit unclear so we are holding a public information session next Wednesday, November 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 in the library. With your help we hope to announce that we have reached our goal and can put our school community forward to be matched with a family.

If you are looking for some information in the meantime, please feel free to look at these links:
