Syrian Refugee Sponsorship – Donate On-Line!

Thank you to everyone who has pledged to help sponsor a Syrian family.

Our community has already pledged over $27,000! Recently, we raised our goal to $37,000 so we can sponsor a family of six and now you can donate on line.  All donations will receive a tax receipt.

We need to act fast to turn those pledges into help for a Syrian family. The matching progress will begin the minute that 80% of our $37,000 goal has been donated through the website. So we are asking you to please make good on your pledges right away.

If you haven’t pledged yet, or if you know anyone from the community who wants to, please consider a donation of any size and share this information far and wide.

If you wish to donate off-line, please make cheques payable to MCC and mail to the address below.  Make sure to include a note saying the donation is for the Hawthorne & Essex Sponsorship, ID #724887.

Syrian Refugee Sponsorship Update

The Essex-Hawthorne community has reached our original goal of raising over $27,000 to sponsor a Syrian refugee family! Thank you so much to everyone who pledged their support. Given the generosity and commitment we have seen, we have decided to push on and see if we can reach a new goal of $35,000 by December 14. This will allow us to sponsor a family of 6 people, as opposed to the original 4 we had envisioned. This means we get to help more people.

Any donation is appreciated and will help us reach our new goal. By the end of the week we should have an on-line registry through the Mennonite Central Committee where people can pay their donation directly AND receive a charitable receipt. In the meantime, keep on pledging so we know where we are at and we can keep you in the loop.

Thank you everyone!

Progress Report Schedule

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The purpose of this letter is to update parents/guardians on the timeline for elementary student progress reporting for the remainder of the 2015-2016 school year.

Grades 1 to 8:

As previously announced, teachers will complete progress reports for students in Grades 1 to 8, which will be sent home on December 10, 2015. Progress reports are designed to provide a broad sense of your child’s progress to date, as well as insight into the development of important learning skills and work habits. The progress reports will be completed in line with the Ministry of Education’s Growing Success document. Teachers will use their professional judgment in completion of these reports.

Reporting Dates for Students in Grades 1 to 8 – December 2015 to June 2016

• Grades 1 to 8 progress reports will be sent home on December 10, 2015.

• Term 1 report cards will be issued the week of February 8, 2016 with parent/guardian-teacher conferences scheduled for February 12, 2016.

• Term 2 report cards will be issued the week of June 27, 2016.

Junior and Senior Kindergarten: As part of the recent provincial agreement, Kindergarten teachers will not be completing progress reports for students in Senior Kindergarten (SK) in December 2015. Parents/guardians of Junior and Senior Kindergarten students will have an opportunity to schedule a class visit or an interview in February 2016.

We value the ongoing, meaningful communication between the home and school to support student learning. Students learn best when parents and educators work together. If you would like to discuss your child’s progress, we invite you to contact your child’s teacher directly.

Sincerely,

Robin Pilkey Donna Quan
Chair of the Board Director of Education
