Arrival of Sponsored Syrian Family

We are very pleased and excited to announce that the Syrian family that the Essex-Hawthorne community sponsored has arrived in Toronto. They arrived on Monday June 20th, which was also World Refugee Day. With over 65 million refugees currently in the world (more than any other time in modern history) it is clear that our local community efforts to welcome and assist refugees are needed now more than ever.

The Breim/Khouja’s four children and their parents arrived tired but in good spirits. A small group of us and some of our kids met them at the airport and then brought them back to the temporary housing that we had arranged. A potluck dinner was held on Monday evening to welcome them.

We are now focusing on settling them in and support them in their life in Toronto.  We have secured permanent housing for the family as of July 1, but they will need household furnishings and goods.  Please go to the following link, and if you have already agreed to donate items, we will be in touch with you soon.

Thank you for your support! Welcoming the Breim/Khouja’s has been a very heartwarming experience.

A Message from the Toronto Public Library: Palmerston Branch

Dear families, students, teachers and school staff.

On behalf of Palmerston Branch – your local public library – congratulations on nearing the end of a successful school year!

Summer holidays are just around the corner and we would like to wish you a great summer!

We would also like to invite you to visit the library and take time to read, play and relax with books and friends at your library.

Palmerston Branch and all 100 branches of Toronto Public Library invite all children to register for our annual summer campaign TD Summer Reading Club and have fun reading this summer! This year our theme is “WILD”!  http://www.tdsummerreadingclub.ca/

Studies show that children who keep reading during the summer do better when they return to school in the fall.

The TD Summer Reading Club is a free program developed by Canadian public libraries; it’s a great way to keep your kids engaged with reading. Children can choose what they want to read, track their reading, interact with our website and connect with kids across the country.
Online, in libraries, or on-the-road, make the TD Summer Reading Club part of your child’s summer adventures.

It’s easy to participate!

  • Register your child at your local library
  • Receive free materials, including a notebook and stickers
  • Engage with library staff
  • Discover great programming
  • Begin your reading adventure together
  • You can also get a free library card for your child, or renew the old/lost one.

On our summer website http://www.tdsummerreadingclub.ca/ children can:

  • Discover great new reads
  • Rate books and submit reviews
  • Read e-books
  • Submit and read jokes
  • Write stories
  • Learn to draw
  • Print colouring pages
  • Track their reading
  • Meet the TD SRC illustrator

Don’t forget to check your local library’s website for free programs and events happening near you!

Palmerston Branch will have storytimes, author visit with Rob Laidlaw “Rescuing the Toronto Zoo Elephants”, music show, puppet show, summer movies, Library Bingo and more!
