SUMMER WATERING SIGN-UP

Hello Gardeners!
Summer is approaching and once again the Garden Committee is looking for parents to sign up for a week of summer watering.  By signing up for the summer watering schedule your job is to make sure the gardens (outdoor classroom garden boxes, new shade perennial garden beside the bike rack, blue canoe, shrubs and troughs in the kindergarten yard) get watered as needed (probably 2-3 times per week depending on rain).
It would also be helpful to do a bit of weeding when you are in the garden (if you have questions about what to weed and what to keep in the ground, please ask!).
When you get to the garden, unlock the box (The code for the lock box is 1-3-5-7) and find the water key (it looks like a tool more than a key). Hook up the hose, turn the key and the water should be flowing.
For those of you who are new to summer watering, we will hold a brief orientation from 8:15-8:45 am in the front garden/outdoor classroom on Tuesday June 27th.

Please feel free to forward this schedule to any other parents you think would be interested in helping out.  It is a fun way to stay connected to the school in the summer and often our kids love joining in to care for the school grounds.

During the week from 7:30 am-6:00 pm the daycare is open so you are able to find the caretakers if you have any difficulties with the water hook up.  Often if you set up the hose in the kindergarten yard during daycare hours, you will have plenty of children who will do the job for you!

We urge you to donate a week of your time!

Essex Parent council Needs You!

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Please join us on June 8th at 6:30 pm for the last Parent Council meeting of the year. As always, childcare will be provided.

There is lots of planning to be done for next year as there are many key positions open on Parent Council including Chair, Communications and Pizza Lunch Co-ordinator to name a few.

Essex relies on the Parent Council to raise funds necessary to fund enrichment opportunities for our students such as the Grade 8 trip, Scientists in the Classroom and Theatricks, Black History Month, Lunar New Year and Aboriginal Day celebrations.

Parent Council also funds the Grade 8 graduation, Lice Checks, and the Teacher Classroom Fund which provides each teacher with a discretionary fund of $200 to purchase extra supplies for their classroom.

Rose Reisman will also be at the meeting sampling food and presenting menus for the new hot lunch program being considered for next year.

We look forward to seeing you there!

May is Get Outside Month and next week is Bike to School Week.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We wanted to let you know that May is “Get Outside Month,” and next week is “Bike to School Week.”
The goal of these initiatives is to educate children about the merits of walking and biking to school instead of driving (or, for those that don’t have the option, car-pooling).
The children will be learning about their eco-footprints and the merits of eco-friendly choices around transit to and from school.
We look forward to everyone taking advantage of the warm (albeit rainy) weather, making eco-friendly choices and being active.

ESSEX LIBRARY WINS $45,000 GRANT FROM INDIGO LOVE OF READING FOUNDATION

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

In January, Essex Public school Literacy Committee applied for the Indigo Love of Reading Grant for our library.  Leslie Tumangday led a team of teachers and parents; together they wrote the grant and created a video that showcased the students and the library.

On Thursday, May 25, the Literacy Committee learned that Essex was successful!  Heather Reisman, Chair of the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, called to say that the Chapters Indigo Bay Bloor store would be adopting Essex for $45,000 to spend in books.

On Friday, we announced the news to the school at an assembly, and each student was asked to contribute to a Wish List of books for their school and classroom libraries.

Special thanks to parents Sarah and Nick Faulkner, Lynette Bacon, Kate Ireland, Harry Quon, and teachers Tanya Bates, Katharine Davis, and Jessica Haber.
