Eco-Schools Updates

This week Essex and Hawthorne have our final audit to maintain our status as a Platinum Eco-School.  We are excited to share all the great things that have been going on in our building.  Here are some updates for parents to be aware of:

1) We have officially applied to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school. We will soon find out if we are chosen and can begin the path to transform recess play for our K-6 students.  If you want to learn more about OPAL check out this bulletin board in the front hall.

2)Car-Free Fridays start this week.  All families (when possible) are encouraged to walk, bike, bus, scoot or skate to school on Friday.  We will be surveying the students each week to see if we are able to take more cars off the road this Spring!
3) Bag2School Textile Recycling Drive is taking place this week from Tuesday May 8-Thursday May 10.  Please drop off your bags in the Guidance Room in the First Floor Essex Primary Hallway (follow the yellow signs from the front foyer).  Lost and found items will be on display in the front hall this week.  Any unclaimed items will go to Bag2School on Thursday.

Bag2School Clothing Drive

Bag2School is a textile recycling company that collects unwanted, wearable and unwearable textiles to be reused or refurbished into new textiles and materials. If you are spring cleaning, we are accepting clean adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), outerwear, hats, belts, handbags, drapes, linens and soft toys. It is a great opportunity to get rid of that single mitten or single sock rather than sending it to landfill. Bag2School donations can be dropped off between Tuesday May 8th and Thursday May 10th.  The drop off spot will be the small “Guidance Room” in the Essex Primary hallway (look for signs in the front foyer to guide you there). Please note, no donations will be accepted after May 10th.

School Community Garden Clean-Up Day

On Sunday April 29th from 10:00 am -12:00 pm we are hosting a school garden clean up day.  This coincides with the City of Toronto’s free compost delivery.  We invite all families to bring their wheelbarrows, wagons, bins, shovels and hoes and help us distribute compost to all of our school gardens.  We would especially like to fill the bins in the kindergarten yard and prep our vegetable garden for planting.  It is a great opportunity to get outside with your kids while doing something positive to benefit the school community.  We hope to see you there!
