Join our Positive Space Lunch

Staff and/or students are invited to participate in a positive space lunch ongoing in 307 on Mondays at lunch.  Please feel free to share your ideas about this space going forward….either in person or via email.  All are welcome.

The goal of the positive space is to provide an opportunity for safe and inclusive discussion around issues facing our community with focuses on issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, issues relating to racism, sexism, and ableism.  We can also make art and listen to music.

It Was a Monster Mash!

Fiesta Farms has officially cleaned up the corn maze – and the Christmas trees are on the way. Before we say good bye to the Halloween season we want to pause to say WOW and THANK YOU to all the students and families from Hawthorne and Essex who joined us at the Monster Mixer!
We danced, limbo’ed, ate, and got spooked in the haunted house.
It as a blast!
A huge thank you to all the staff and parents who made this event happen.
Thank you to Matt Hawkins who brought us Zorgox – It was incredible!
Thank you to the grade 7/8 students who did an amazing job decorating.
Thank you to Glenn and his road crew who built us an amazing DJ booth.
 Shout out’s to Dar and Alyssa who DJ’ed and the student volunteers from Harbord Collegiate.
Can’t wait till next year!

BAG2SCHOOL Textile Recycling Drive Nov 15 -19

Remember to bring your unwanted clean clothing, shoes (tied together please), linen, belts, purses and soft bags to your parent-teacher interviews next week. Instead of being thrown into landfills as garbage, quality textiles can be re-used as affordable second-hand clothing both in North America and overseas. Any items deemed unsuitable for resale will be taken to textile recycling facilities where they will be broken down and remade into useful materials, such as fleece jackets. As an added bonus the school council is paid a small amount per kg that goes back into funding enrichment programming for our students.
Items will be collected starting Thursday Nov. 15th– Monday Nov. 19h. All bags can be dropped off on the First Floor in the Essex Primary Hallway (Guidance Room). Look for yellow signs to guide you from the front foyer.
Lost and found items will be on display in the front hall during the Bag2School Drive.  Any unclaimed items will go to Bag2School on Thursday.

Eco Initiatives

•Skate/ Helmet Exchange will happen in the front foyer from November 9th- November 15th.
Please bring your skates and/or helmet to exchange.

•Boomerang/ Waste Free Lunches are going well.

We noticed that there was a problem on Friday with pizza lunch.
We would like all children to bring their lunch boxes on Friday to ensure that pizza is eaten and there is no recycling or landfill left in the lunch room.
•Please be sure that your children dress for the weather, raincoats, boots, if needed.  Ensure that your children are wearing outdoor and indoor shoes to help keep the dirt outside rather than bring it into the school. There will also be a sign up sheet where you can indicate what you are bringing and what you would like to receive.

Food Drive

This Halloween Essex and Hawthorne will be participating in the Me to We, WE Scare Hunger Food Drive!

Hunger affects people from all walks of life, including those you might not suspect. People who experience food insecurity are often forced to make difficult choices. Parents choose between skipping meals and feeding their children. Do they buy groceries or pay the rent or electricity bill? When we come together to collect food for people struggling with hunger, we can help ensure they have the resources to feed themselves and their families. By supporting WE Scare Hunger, you can contribute to your community and also raise awareness of the root causes of hunger.

We appreciate all donated food, but there are certain items that are always in need because of their high nutritional value.

  • Baby food and formula
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned fish and meat
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Rice, grains, lentils, beans
  • Dried pasta
  • Pasta sauce and canned tomatoes (whole or crushed)
  • Cans of soup and stew
  • Powdered, canned and tetra pak milk

Teachers will have food collection boxes set up to receive donations from Oct 29th to Nov. 2nd. Let’s all work together to support families in need!
